I help customers use Apptio Cloudability, I do not personally use it to solve issues that I personally have. The things we do are help customers with organizing their cloud costs so that they can do a showback or chargeback model. Other use cases are to clean up errors in the Cloud billing too, and find opportunities to save money using the cloud through optimization.
  • Organizing Cloud Costs
  • Reporting
  • The Tag Explorer
  • Views
  • User Management
  • Scaling the product to be usable across large organizations
Apptio Cloudability is good for large enterprises where they need to bring all their payer accounts, linked accounts, subscriptions, etc into a singular view. It's not great if companies are already well organized and can use cloud native tools to solve their issues. I think Apptio Cloudability costs to much for smaller customers that really could use the help.

We use it to manage all of our savings plans and RIs. We also use it for right-sizing opportunities and we use it to graph those optimization efforts to show the cost going down as optimization changes are happening.
  • It shows the visibility into the cost and a single pane of glass for all of our cloud providers, multiple products in those multi-cloud. So it shows us our spending across the cloud by vendor, by product, and by all the tags that we have in the cloud. So it gives us visibility into many different directions in our cost.
  • For me, it is a lot of anomaly detection and I think there's a lot of improvement that can be made to show anomalies that happen over time because if it's just day to day or week to week, you may not see the change. But if you see the trend over a period of time, show me something that has grown 40%, 50% over the past three months and maybe you can do those things and we just haven't figured them out yet. So we are very new to the product, but I think anomaly detection for me is one of the bigger things.
I think if you are maybe small in your cloud spend and you're only in one cloud, I think you can probably get away with just using the cost management tool in that cloud vendor. I don't think it's necessary for everyone and I think you have to have enough optimizations to have your return on investment, but it's certainly suited if you plan to grow and you're still small, get it now and don't wait.

Apptio Cloudability has helped American on the FinOps journey by providing the visibility and spend details that app owners and engineers need to make quality business decisions, such as Architecture, Right Sizing, Performance and future investments.
  • Consumption Visibility
  • Financial views
  • Acct and Product teams listen to us as a customer and make recommended enhancements
  • Over time, pulling all the Apptio tools together to provide one powerful view.
Apptio Cloudability is well suited for organizations looking to provide financial/cost data to help drive their FinOps journey.

As a centralized source of truth for spending, cost and usage to budget our cloud costs. The business problem is reducing cost and optimizing our current resources. The scope includes all departments and organization within AA that uses the cloud for their applications regardless of cloud provider.
  • Show usage for each product team as we tag them in our system
  • show where each resource can be optimized
  • provide widgets for individual users to filter and sort their data and create their own dashboard
  • Reports need to be readable across devices (mobile and desktop)
  • Kubernetes breakdown on rightsizing at the namespace level (namespace = application for our aks tenant teams)
  • Action integrated or automated (down to the namespace level for aks containers)
Sharing visibility of each individual team's costs and usage so teams can better budget is a great use for Apptio Cloudability. Less appropriate for our environment and resources not attached to our cloud spend.

We are a reseller of AWS, Azure, GCP, Oracle and IBM Cloud. We invoice our customers based on their usage as well as sell solutions deployed on those platforms.
  • multi-cloud usage
  • aggregation and segregation of usage across multi-cloud
  • anomly detection
  • feature parity across govcloud versions of cldy
  • meet higher compliance requirements (FedRAMP High, IL4 IL5)
well suited for individual application owners to see their usage, less so for a brokerage admin that manages multiple brokerages and require segregation. Eagerly await GA of CLDY for MSP

We use Apptio Cloudability in our bank to better manage the cost of our IT infrastructure on the cloud across multiple cloud providers. It helps us to choose best options for the deployment of our infrastructure in terms of Speed, cost, and quality. Different teams (Finance, Devops) collaborate together to understand the findings from this and make the decision for future use cases.
  • Budget management
  • Reducing Cloud costs
  • Forecasting
  • Cost allocation
  • Support for Other cloud provides apart from AWS, GCP and Azure
  • More granular insights into spending for each department by tagging
  • Advanced anomaly detection with AI
In my experience, Apptio Cloudability is best suited for a high-level overview of Cost reporting and management. It gives recommendations to optimize your cloud budget. For example, It will give recommendations by analyzing the past trends which types of machines an application should be using for its optimal performance. It also picks machines, and disks that are not used for long and it predicts any cost anomaly detection. It is less appropriate for other small cloud providers and user training.

This platform is useful to me, and my team regarding financial data to optimise its cost and communicate my business value of the cloud. And also it supports my organisation in adopting the financial account to the cloud. It also enables them to operate together and improve the unit of cloud revealing the business value of cloud investment.

  • Team Operate Closely
  • Reveal the Business
  • Optimize the Cost
  • More effective strategic decision making
  • Reduce the costing
  • Team Ownership is good

Suitable for small businesses with straightforward cloud requirements and predictable workloads, Apptio Cloudability stands out in situations demanding strong capabilities in budget tracking, forecasting, and cloud spending optimization. Its consolidated view proves ideal for businesses utilizing multiple cloud providers, especially in environments with intricate cost structures. It's the specific needs and scale of an organization to determine whether Apptio Cloudability is the right fit.

We currently use Apptio Cloudability for the following key functions (not limited to) Rightsizing, Optimization, Cost Transparency. These details are in turn used to bring business value to different personas within the org. From procurement, to engineering to finance to executives to application owners and so forth. We also look at bringing in the cost details to ApptioOne
  • New Apptio BI reporting seems promising
  • Showcasing untagged costs
  • First step towards rightsizing and optimization explorations
  • Anomaly detection
  • Combined reporting views from the data sources
  • Showcasing the dependencies with the recommendations
  • Ability to effective allocate shared costs
Viewing first level information with regards to untagged costs and optimization opportunities. For further deep dives, viewing dependencies and even anomaly detection would look at the CSP functionality

The Apptio Cloudability tool drives efficiencies and provides a granular view to better manage Cloud environments & spend.
  • Customizing dashboards
  • Planning and forecasting
  • Comparing actual data to those of different time periods
  • Export granular data to Excel
  • Forecasting based on anticipated usage, migrations, etc.
  • Comparing Budget to Actuals
  • Faster buffering to push out data
Apptio Cloudability has shaved hours of work by allowing me the ability to dig into financial data at the bottom level. It helps me perform historical analyses of cloud usage and costs, and to validate our company's forward looking financial projections.

We use Apptio Cloudability to actively manage our cloud spend across hundreds of applications. This involves identifying opportunities to reduce or optimize our spend along with holding users actively accountable through a charge back model.
  • It can easily synthesize massive amounts of data into digestible formats
  • The api integrations allow for unique customizations including integration with our CMDB.
  • There is currently no ability to apply global filters over the data in cloudability. Rather users must go through a difficult process to create custom views which they are later able to apply over top of their datasets.
  • Drill functionality does not really exists but appears to be more of an after though add-on. Yes you are able to "drill" but the visuals disappear and even the ability to export the more detailed information.
Apptio Cloudability, is a powerful tool and its use case is expanding rapidly with the growing investment within Apptio BI and now the IBM acquisition. It can handle large amounts of data and it provides great levels of customization for how users can interact with the data. Apptio Cloudability, however, does lack in it's dynamic use cases where users might want to actively drill into visualizations or filter the dashboard content. If you are simply looking for data reports it is able to provide great data at fast speeds.

We use it currently to increase visibility and help coordinate costs to help us understand our usages across multiple departments who never had insight into this information. Our costs began to spiral out of control and now we have an understanding of drivers and trends. I was recently able to identify a spike in costs on one resource that we met on as a group and developed a strategy to save a good chunk of money on a monthly basis.
  • Visualizes the trends.
  • Notifications via email to keep us aware of activities.
  • Helps us forecast better.
  • The modeling is a bit difficult to navigate as a new user in my opinion.
I think the best value that it offers is visibility for many different user types as opposed to the native tools the products offer that are limited to the engineering teams generally. I think it is appropriate if you have multiple cloud providers as well as it puts everything in the same format for easier reviews.

We use Apptio Cloudability to provide business with transparency on IT costs, identify cost pools, allocate IT spend and generate insights for business decisions. Recently we have been able to build matrix that provides with costs distribution across multiple regions that helps drive stretegic decisions on IT ops. A key benefit was achieved while building App rationalization frames as well.
  • Cost Transparency
  • Cost Allocations
  • Cloud spend distribution
  • User interface
  • Ease of usage
  • Automation (AI)
Suited for enterprises that need an additional layer of spend visibility for cloud components. Usually within large organizations that have lost control somehow of IT spend. If you use well-known cloud solutions like Microsoft Azure or AWS, Apptio Cloudability can help provide insights on what is being used where, for how much and with what value.

FinOps tooling is critical to our operational success and value delivery - Apptio Cloudability acquired our current/previous FinOps engine "Cloudwiry" which has been an invaluable tool to date. Looking forward to continuing the success on Apptio Cloudability platform.
  • multi dashboard capability
  • Tagging alignment native in tool vs. CSP changes
  • Reservation "automation"
  • solid/credible rightsiging/optimizations
  • price point
  • reporting templates
Our firm is a TBM advocate where the Apptio One and Apptio Cloudability compliment each other and further bring finance/IT together to interpret value. Having that perspective is great for C-suite resources who many times do not do well with large complex numbers that cloud data can be filled with. We are a tremendously large shop - supporting over 800 applications/teams - and need that precision of show/chargeback in a tool that is not only easy for us - but compliments end user experience

Cloudabily helps us present and visualise Cloud cost in an effective way. It allows for cost allocation to enhance cost accountability. Provide good trend insight and low hanging fruit recommendations.
  • Easy to use UI
  • Customisation based on business dimension
  • Good reporting capacity that can be scheduled
  • TrueCost Explorer and RIghtsizing Explorer provides great overview
  • Anamolly detection will be more useful if it can leverage business dimensions
  • ASG recommendation are generally too aggressive, will be good to give option to choose the performance metric teams are willing to change and display the chosen metric
  • Chart visualisation can be improved, for example, using a consistent colour for a Product or Service Name, and have value labels to differentiate value for different section of the chart
Recommend if you're already using Apptio, qw can be integrated with other Apptio products, however Apptio BI needs more improvement to bring data from different modules and apply "view" of filter at the report level. Which is currently not supported.

Apptio Cloudability is a cost analysis tool that helps us keep track of what we are using within Azure Cloud. It has helped us keep track of specific costs and breakdown by application owner (with appropriate tagging). This tool also helps us decide future spending requirements.
  • Cost Analysis
  • Spending breakdown by Product/Application
  • Forecast of cost for future budget spending
  • Setup of account to communicate with Cloud Providers
  • Tagging documentation
Not only has Cloudability shown it to be a top-notch product when it comes to Cloud cost analysis, but its customer service support is very responsive. Once you understand the tool (and most of its features), it becomes easy to create reports and show where your Cloud spending is actually going.

We predominantly use Apptio Cloud ability to track costs across multiple cloud platforms of clients and various internal projects related to AWS and Azure accounts. Specifically, we configure different persona-based reports by leveraging multiple dimensions. Sharing the reports to the stakeholders to track the live costs across multiple accounts. Downloading the reports at scheduled intervals for internal reviews. For comparing the historical usage across different accounts and environments. Further eagerly waiting for the workflow integrations like servicenow and other third party ITSM and alerting and automation tools which further make cloudability even more robustness.
  • In Analyzing the detailed analysis of the cloud costs usage specifically in terms of analyzing AWS CUR reports which consists of very huge files.
  • In terms of offering the rich set of dimensions related to the resources across the clouds and sharing it to levels of personas
  • It's good that APIs that allow integrations with other systems for data sharing and automation based on the organizational needs.
  • Automation and policy enforcement especially in terms of activities like shutting down of the resources in the Non Business hours.
  • It would be good to see if it offers integrations with wide variety of tools like Service NOW, MS Teams, DataDog, Slack and also with cloud native Notification services like SNS etc.
  • It would be great if Apptio cloudability provides comprehensive documentation and training
  • There is scope for improvement on Enhanced cost optimization Algorithms.
Apptio Well-Suited Scenarios: Specifically in Multi-Cloud Environments , cost visibility and transparency, Budget planning and forecasting, cost allocation, chargeback and show back scenarios.
Apptio Less Appropriate Scenarios are Smaller-scale users might find simpler cost management solutions.
If cloud usage is consistent and easy to predict, a more basic cost management tool might suffice.
For organizations with very limited budgets or those looking for more budget-friendly cost management options, Apptio Cloud ability's extensive features might be considered costly compared to other simpler and more affordable alternatives.

  • Cloudability helps is generating reports for aws usage based on tags.
  • cloudability helps in generating rightsizing reccomendtaions for saving aws cost
  • cloudability helps in forecasting aws bill and helps in budgeting
  • CloudAbility gives optimization recommendations based on past 1 month usage only. Mostly business owners are comfortable on seeing recommendations based on past 2-3 months usage. CloudAbility can do some improvement here.
  • Cloudability just gives downsizing recommendations, as an additional feature CloudAbility can work on providing upscaling recommendations as well.
  • Cloudability can bring lambda and EKS in its scope as well.
we are using CloudAbility to optimize aws cost of our assets and rightsized the assets. our organization was paying a lot on AWS bills, we had no idea how to optimize the assets, then we started using CloudAbility. it gives us rightsizing recommendations to optimize the instance size and save on aws bills.

Well, in my opinion, Cloudability is performing very well in the current market that is filled with cloud cost management tools like Turbonomics, Cloudzero and many more. But I want to emphasize that it isn't GCP-ready yet and lacks some maturity with Azure as well.
